What is tallow?

Tallow dates back to ancient times and has been used for its nourishing skin properties. It’s high in vitamins A, D, E, and K, and is supportive of skin health. The tallow we use is from rendered beef fat (taken exclusively from the kidneys, also known as suet). This is the most prized form of tallow for its nourishing properties. The fat is rendered (melted down) and used in our balms.

We know it can feel strange at first to use animal fat on your skin, but it’s very bioavailable and nourishing. It can be used for conditions such as eczema, psoriasis, sunburn, cuts, scrapes, burns, razor burn, cracked heels, and more. Since our skin is our largest organ, these nutrients are absorbed into our skin and can support our health internally too.

We have sourced high quality tallow that is 100% grass-fed, and pasture raised in an ecosystem free of pesticides and pharmaceuticals. We pride ourselves on delivering a quality product that you can use daily for your skincare and health needs.

Can you briefly explain each balm and its uses?

Yes! We know it can be overwhelming choosing a balm sometimes, so feel free to message us if you need help selecting one.

Here are some uses for our balms (as shared by our customers):

Thyroid balm (scented/standard texture) - our best selling balm offers thyroid support, deeper sleep support, increased energy levels, bug bites, bug repellent, pain relief, restless legs, and more.

Heel balm (unscented/standard texture) - cracked heels, athlete's foot, overall skin balm that can be used anywhere, scars, cuts, burns, skin tightening, stitches, hand foot and mouth disease, and more.

Orange balm (scented/whipped texture) - general body and face moisturizer, sun burn, face moisturizer, deodorant, etc.

Body balm (unscented/whipped texture) - apply anywhere on your body/face, scars, cuts, burns, scrapes, stitches, and more (use it unscented or you can add your own essential oils if you prefer). We like having unscented options for those of you who are sensitive to essential oils/scents, and for situations where you wouldn't want to use oils on a cut, etc.

Sun balm (unscented/standard texture) - sunscreen for the body and face, diaper rash, etc.

For more information about each balm, please see our product descriptions on our website and also highlights on instagram (@tropicaltallow).

Please message us with questions! We are more than happy to help you choose one based on your needs.

How do I use your balms?

All of our balms can be used on any part of your body, but to get the best results, we have formulated balms that address specific areas. Please see our product description pages, as well as the label, for details.

Does tallow have a scent?

Pure tallow typically has a very mild, almost neutral scent. It's not inherently fragrant or aromatic. However, depending on the season and animal it came from, it can vary. We find that it has more of a "tallow scent" in the summer months when the cows are consuming grass, compared to the winter then they consume silage. The color of tallow can change too due to these conditions. The scent of tallow, if detectable at all, is usually very subtle and can be described as a faint, slightly nutty, earthy, or fatty odor. We offer both unscented and scented balms (with essential oils), so please choose what you prefer.

Unscented balms: heel balm, body balm, sun balm

Scented balms (with essential oils): thyroid balm, orange balm

Why does my balm seem different this time?

We take pride ensuring we use the same high quality ingredients and process every time we make our balms. Tallow, the primary ingredient in our balms, is from rendered beef fat (taken exclusively from the kidneys, also known as suet). The environment in which the animals are raised can have a significant impact on the composition of the tallow. Factors such as climate, diet, and the overall health of the animals can affect the fatty acid profile of the tallow, which in turn influences the properties of the resulting balm. You might find your balm has a different scent, color, or texture when comparing it to previous batches. When you are working with a product with natural ingredients (and no preservatives) it can appear different with each batch. However, our formula and process is the same every time. We always strive to deliver a high-quality product that goes through several quality checks along the way.

Do your tallow balms expire?

Our balms are shelf stable, however, we recommend using your balms within 6 months of your purchase date to ensure quality. You can store your standard balms (heel and thyroid) in the refrigerator to extend the shelf life.

Do I need to refrigerate my tallow balm?

Refrigeration is not necessary. If your balm has melted during shipping or while sitting out, feel free to pop it in the fridge to harden. Otherwise, please store your balms in a dark, dry, cool place. You can keep your heel and thyroid balm in your refrigerator to extend the shelf life if you choose.

Do you offer a discount code?

Yes! If you join our Text Club (homepage pop-up) you will receive a monthly 10% off discount code sent the day of our restock. It's our way of saying "thank you" for your support every month. Your discount code must be entered during checkout, and cannot be credited later. Our Text Club also offers free giveaways every month, and you'll receive early access to balms when we have extra inventory, as well as restock reminders. See our "text club" highlight on @tropical tallow (instagram) for details.

Do you ship internationally?

We currently ship within The United States and Canada. For our Canadian customers, you are responsible for paying any import costs to the shipping carrier, such as duties, import taxes, or brokerage/disbursement fees upon delivery. Our Canadian customers have received their products within five days, up to three weeks, depending on customs.

Do you offer returns?

Due to being a small family owned business, we do not accept returns. All sales are final. However, if you have issues with shipping or have questions about your balms, we encourage you to send us a message. We always want to make sure that you are happy with your balms.

Shipping Issues

If your product was damaged during shipping, please contact us at info@tropicaltallow.com or send us a direct message on Instagram @tropicaltallow.
